We have a new neighbor!

It looks like work is about to begin on lot 26
It'll be nice to get a lot of the construction out of the way before we move in
But having it empty gave me good access for back-of-the-house pictures
Of course, there really isn't much more happening back there anymore

But, boy, the sky in this picture sums up this summer perfectly.
That is not a "summer sky"

Oh yeah, we almost have a roof.
"You mean you almost have plywood?"
"No, we have plywood.  We almost have a roof"

A quick post today.
Electric was supposed to get started at the end of this week.
I'm going to check in to see where that's at.

Until next time...

Play ball

After a day of rain, things were back in action today
Technically, some things got done yesterday.
But inside - which means on the main level, because upstairs...

Only way you're staying dry under that roof is if you have an umbrella
But it's not like it was a perfect day.
While I was out taking pictures, it rained

While at the construction side across the road...

It's just not fair.
But I can't help but notice that this thing is starting to look like a house.

I spoke with our project manager today.
I e-mailed him in the morning to ask if the crew was enjoying swimming in the newly filled basement pool after 2" of rain.
He called back and assured me that the materials could handle the 2" of rain and then some.  Even said that snow isn't a big factor - which we don't intend to have to worry about.
Though after building houses in the snow, you'd think we'd see windows with screens on them.

Anyway, the guys who were out working today didn't seem concerned they were going to fall through
So, I'm okay with it.

It's not a video, but it's another picture of the hoe that lives on our lot.
Once we move in, this hoe won't live here no mo.

Here's another look at the entire scene

Last time we had a progress day, the 1st floor windows were in.
Well, now...

I couldn't remember if we had a picture of the front step yet.
So here's one.

Looking through the windows, you can see some of the 2nd floor framing

They must've been working up there...
They left the lights on so we can see the framing.
Lights are all off downstairs.

But here's a closer look at some of the framing.
If I was standing where I think I was standing, this is the master bedroom

We weren't sure if we needed the "bonus room"
We thought about finishing the basement or doing the bonus room.
Then we thought some more...
A basement is an open area under the house.
The bonus room is wasted space above the garage that doesn't get framed - or even built out if you opt against it at construction time.
In other words, almost too ridiculously expensive of an undertaking to put in at a later time
So we put in the bonus room...
It'll be nice to have an upstairs playroom; we can always finish the basement later.
We did plumbing rough-ins for a bathroom down there.
Here's a zoom-in of the build-out section of the bonus room.

I decided to remain left justified on my text.
I should really use the true "caption" feature on the blogger system.
But this is how we roll.

We're getting close - the roof is framed, and we were told once it goes up, the house is about 60 days from being done.  So, a few more days of this, then some electrical work, and we'll be getting set for a pre-drywall walk-through.  Exciting stuff.

Like the Yankees, the construction team is rained out

Nothing kills momentum like a nice soaking rainstorm, so since we're on a roll, I thought we'd post tonight about the whole process (what momentum did you think I meant).  Oh yeah, no construction happened today.

We always knew Stonecrest was not our forever home. After the first few projects we knew that someday, we would build our next home.  That is to say, the first few projects we planned.  That does not include gutting the basement right after moving in, nor does it include replacing the entire HVAC system.  We planned to redo the kitchen.  We figured we'd touch up the office a bit.  The bathrooms were always a maybe.  The deck was a must.

We did projects, more or less, in order of priority based on need/want.  We never did get to the office, but we designed one hell of a kitchen.  It took a few years, but we finally got around to renovating the basement (since it wasn't on the original list), and while we were at it, we redid a bathroom.  Because two contractors are better than one - even if they are working on different ends of the house.  Who needs a security system when you constantly have someone in there working, right?

But yeah, it got to be a bit much.  We figure we're one or two renovations away from this house being perfect.  None of them would grow it, but they'd make it perfect, and how do you leave the perfect house.  So, we started thinking that we'd put that new build on the radar.  Knowing land was limited in the school district we chose, we constantly kept an eye on "what was left."  One Sunday, we were out for a drive, the girls were asleep, so we detoured.  We looked at a few lots, took in the view, then saw an "open house" sign.  We didn't know if it was open, because the sign had fallen over, so we slowed down, looked it over, and drove away.  At the intersection, we decided to take one more look.  Katherine, who Marissa would come to know as "that lady who's at every house we go to" must have seen us drive by and had set the sign back up.

So, with the girls in tow, we went in.

As everybody knows, open houses are a waste of time, and no serious buyers or clients ever come from them.

And as every Realtor will tell you, the most important thing is for a potential buyer to be able to see themselves in the house.  Marissa kept standing at the base of the stairs and asking if she could go up, and we kept telling her in a few minutes.

Finally, we gave in, and let her go.

"Marissa, where are you?" we asked.
"I'm in my room," came the response, repeatedly.

Not shown in that picture is the closet we found her hiding in on several occasions.  And by "we," I mean Katherine.

We toyed with putting in an offer about an hour later, but decided to throttle back and evaluate.  Was this the time?  Was that the house?  The answers were yeah, maybe, and eh, possibly, respectively.

We know the answer to the first question turned out to be yes.  That house got pulled off the market, so we'll never know if the second would've been as well, but for what it's worth, my money is on yes.  But instead, my money's on a new build.  All of it... except for a few dollars for some strained peas, a hot dog, and some mac and cheese, which should feed the family for a few days once we move in.  Can someone please buy me a beer?

The story obviously continues; the buying process was interesting, but there is a house to watch being built.  Fortunately, a watched house doesn't boil, but it does get built, and we'll be there with the camera.  Actually, we borrowed one, so we have two cameras, because we never know who's going to get the pictures taken on any given day (most are from me, except a few that aren't quite as incredible).

There is also a video of a hoe.

We may post it some day; unlike many videos of hoes, it is safe for work.

We'll save some of that stuff until the next rain-out, which the way this summer has gone could be anytime.  I mean, seriously?  What ever happened to nice Mondays through Fridays and crappy weekends?  We'd be moving in this week if we could get more of that!

We leave you with a picture of Lucy holding a banana.

Good night!

Did we mention Ryan builds quickly?

Chapter 2 begins.
Or is it floor #2

Caught a few more "action" shots today
What was starting to look like a house is really looking like a house now

This is what would've been the "wall of doom"
You see why we put in those downstairs windows...

And speaking of those windows...
though these are more likely the upstairs windows since downstairs are already installed

Where could this piece be going...

The "standard" Verona would just corner off at this point
But we are putting in an extra room
The "bonus room" they call it
Or, as we call it, the "bonus room"

Elapsed Time: 2 hours

We only have a few more days to enjoy the flood of outdoor work
So, knowing they were still working, we thought we'd check back on the way home.

And the back...

This is our "twin"
Different model, different builder...
But broke ground the same day, right across the road.

A view of the two construction sights from the top of the cul-de-sac
Ours is on the right.

Here's hoping for an "easy" rain storm the next few days...
Not looking ideal for construction.
Or a half-built house with no roof.

Progress continues in a vertical fashion

So we drive up on Saturday morning, and what do we see, but something that really resembles a house! With windows!  And a door!

There are even a few windows on this side...

And some in the back (I love this picture!)

But alas, none on this side... though we avoided having what I dubbed a "wall of doom" - the base model of the Verona has no windows on one side of the house.  We added a few - and this wall will have windows upstairs.

The giant "X" hardly seems necessary.  I wasn't going to pull my car in, but who knows, maybe this neighborhood has problems with people just pulling cars into unfinished garages.

Behind the garage is the kitchen.  Opening visible on the left side should be the set back for the refrigerator; right side is the opening (which will open into a mudroom)... and the bank of 3 windows is the morning room, which will have evening sun, thus officially making it a misnomer.

In our drive-bys of the site, we have met a few of the neighbors.  One we spoke to the other day confirmed that Ryan does build houses fast.  Our project manager used the term "efficient."  Either way, it won't be long until these are going in...

Not sure which set is which, which is fine, because I'm not the one building the house.
Which is fine, because I'd like it to be able to stand.

I promised a picture of Marissa... figured we could take one right in front of the front door.

I still obsess over this sign.  I drove by one day and it was very dusty.  I actually wanted to ask the crew on site if I could go in and brush it off, but they were busy.  And I don't own a hard hat.
Yet.
Anyway, either the rain took care of it, or someone wiped it because it was nice and clean Saturday morning.

 The yard?  Not so much.

But this is why there's black fencing to hide things from everyone except people walking along trying to find pictures to put witty captions on.

Oh, speaking of sold signs...
I taught her the Vanna White pose...
I neglected to tell her which side to point to.

That's all for now!
Perhaps next time, I'll pick either left justify or center and stick with it through the entire post.

Holy cow, we have progress

We talked to our project manager this week (well, Alicia did; when he called me, it was in the 30 seconds I was away from my desk)... he said the rain hasn't wreaked too much havoc on our time frame - perhaps a day or so behind.  He also let us know this would be an exciting week of visible progress.  He wasn't kidding.  Check out what was on the lot today:

Wait, what?

I was told I haven't posted enough pictures of the kids lately because we're too focused on pictures of the house.  THERE!  We couldn't find our camera's battery charger, so we have a bit of a gap, and it turns out all pictures of Marissa were taken during the gap, so they're on another camera and another SD card - in Alaska, in fact.  So, once we get ahold of them, and find a surprised blank stare at the camera type picture of her, we'll post it.  Okay, so where was I?  Oh yeah, blogging about a house being built.

 ...by these guys:

Here's a look at the front of the house.  When internal walls go up, you won't be able to see the windows at the back of the garage because they'll be in the morning room, so we're enjoying the unobstructed view now.

Tyvek anyone?

We've posted plenty of pictures of the front door.  Now, we finally get our first glimpse of our back door, making its only appearance in front of the house.

Looks neat.  By the way, unless they did it this morning, there still may not be concrete poured yet.  If they don't get it poured, we might just have dirt floors.  Damn rain.  But hey, won't have to sweep too often.  No matter how often you sweep dirt, it never looks clean.

That's all for now!
